FAQs About Hot Honey Chicken Wings
Can I make and use homemade hot honey?
Yes, you can make homemade hot honey and use it for this recipe instead of Mike’s Hot Honey sauce. However, I’m not sure that homemade hot honey sauce would be cost efficient. Hot honey sauces typically contain a combination of honey, vinegar, lemon juice, peppers, sriracha and/or hot sauce. If you have these ingredients on hand and/or want more control over the flavor of your sauce, you can certainly make it yourself. That said, I haven’t tried to make homemade hot honey and cannot recommend a good hot honey blend.
Is there another way to cook these if I don’t have an air fryer?
Yes! If you don’t have an air fryer, you could cook these chicken wings in the oven or on a skillet. In the oven, bake them at 400°F for approximately 30-40 minutes. If you want crispy wings, switch the oven to broil for the final 5-6 minutes of cook time. In an oiled skillet (I recommend using a cast iron skillet) over medium heat, cook the wings for 16-20 minutes, flipping halfway through. No matter what cooking method you use, ensure the chicken wings reach an internal temperature of 165°F to ensure they are fully cooked and safe to consume.
How should I store these wings?
In an airtight container, these wings will stay good in the refrigerator for up to four days. Be sure to refrigerate the wings with 60-90 minutes of cooking as bacteria can quickly grow at room temperature. You can reheat the wings in an air fryer, microwave, skillet or in the oven.
Tips to Make the Perfect Hot Honey Wings
Quickly dip the wings: Once the wings have cooked, move quickly to add them your sauce bowl and mix them so that the wings are still hot and warm up the sauce. Waiting too long to sauce the wings will lead to a lukewarm wing with a slightly above room temperature sauce. When dipping the wings, I add 3-5 to a bowl (depending on the bowl’s size) and then pour in the wing sauce. Then I add more sauce as needed as I coat the rest of the wings.
Don’t use frozen wings: While you can use frozen wings, I recommend using never frozen wings as they’ll offer more flavor. They will also allow the seasoning to stick to them a bit better. If you go the frozen wing route, be sure to allow them to completely thaw before seasoning and cooking them in the air fryer. And if you completely ignore all my previous advice, be sure to allow extra cooking time for the frozen wings to completely cook.
Season to your liking: I air fryer chicken wings a lot. To save time, I use an old seasoning bottle and fill it with the wing seasoning blend that I used for this hot honey chicken wings recipe (
Cook the wings in batches: Depending on the number of wings you’re cooking and the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook these wings in batches. If your wings are touching or overlapping, it’s a good sign that you should be cooking them in more than one batch. Allowing space between the chicken wings will allow for even cooking.
Consider marinading: If you have extra time on your hands, consider marinading these wings for at least one hour. Marinade by placing the wings in an airtight bag and mixing in about 6 oz of hot honey sauce.
