We used Stubbs original barbecue sauce for this recipe. This is our go-to sauce that has nationwide distribution and can be found at most retailers. If you live in the D.C. area, we’d recommend giving Baltimore BBQ sauce a try.

How do you store this recipe?

We use glass 3.4 cup meal prep containers for this recipe. When storing it, add in a small plastic cup with leftover from your slow cooker. When you go to reheat it, pour this sauce on the ribs. This will help prevent them from drying out when being reheated.

Tips From the Kitchen

Cover in sauce periodically: We recommend splashing these ribs with the sauce periodically while they’re cooking. We aimed for once every 30 minutes during the cooking process. We’ve found that this helps prevent the ribs from drying out. 

Add frozen broccoli: If you want to make this a one pot meal, we recommend adding a bag of frozen broccoli on top of the ribs. If you elect to add broccoli, use a two-compartment meal prep container to store the meal that keeps the broccoli separate from the ribs.

Don’t forget to pack extra sauce: If you’re meal prepping this recipe, you’ll want to make sure you have extra sauce on hand to dip the ribs in.

  • 1 slow cooker
  • 6 3.4 cup meal prep containers


  • 3 lb boneless country-style pork ribs
  • 1 onion sliced into 1/2 inch rings
  • 18 oz barbecue sauce
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper


  • Slice onions into 1/2-inch rings and place on the bottom of the slow cooker, then place ribs on top and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • In a medium-large bowl, combine the barbecue sauce, maple syrup and mustard. Pour mixture over ribs.
  • Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours, until the internal temperature reaches 145°F.
  • Remove and allow to cool, then serve or place in meal prep containers.
